10 years of Apordoc
The state of Portuguese documentaries
Apordoc was officially founded as an association on the 15th of July 1998 with the goal of contributing to the development of a culture of documental cinema. To commemorate the association’s 10th anniversary, and as a conclusion to this edition of doclisboa, the festival will present several events on the state of Portuguese documentaries.
By tracing a review of its activity, it is first necessary to question the state of health of Portuguese documentary. What has changed in ten years? What were the founder’s dreams and those who supported it? What is today’s reality?

Body (Corpo Todo)
Pedro Sena Nunes
34’ Portugal

Movement. The fulfilment of an empty space, the depuration that finds the essence of a body, an entire body. Director Pedro Sena Nunes decided to look, listen and participate in a fascinating process of artistic creation that is confined to the desire of turning a body that carries a deficiency into one that carries challenges among other bodies. “I focused my glance on the essence of communicability through image and movement. I heard bodies of several deficiency carriers: choreographers, musicians, stage directors and actors. And I filmed all the others with a devoted articulation. In a moment of life, I found out that dreams are impossible.”
Do Something (Era Preciso Fazer as Coisas)
Margarida Cardoso
55’ Portugal
A few days in autumn during the rehearsals for Uncle Vanya by Chekhov. The actors and director are looking for a way to build something in common. Their inner voices and their doubts intermingle with those of the characters they are trying to put on stage. A house, a time, age and frustration. Aren’t we all looking for some meaning?

The “boom” of documentaries about artists

Independent Heart (Coração Independente)
Joana Cunha Ferreira
50’ Portugal

Joana Vasconcelos is one of the most famous and recognized Portuguese artists of her generation. She has an impressive national and international career at her age, and her works are usually pointed out for its kitsch and garish dimension. Loved by some and hated by others, her work is as much renowned as herself. For almost a year, director Joana Cunha Ferreira depicted the life of one of her most iconic pieces, “Dorothy”, a giant shoe built with hundreds of lid pots. The film is a close insight of the artist and her team’s work, but mainly a portrait of Joana Vasconcelos, her strength, will and dedication to work.
