Jewish culture and its intrinsic nomadism is a theme that had attracted Ottinger since the late 1980s. Her unrealised fiction film Diamond Dance was intended as “a love letter to New York’s Jewish communities” and a “saga of wandering diamonds and wandering Jews”. Low-budget and low-scale in terms of execution, Ester is an echo of that ambitious concept that turns to the classic religious parable. Famed Hungarian writer György Konrád narrates, while non-fictional dimension is introduced by non-professional performers: immigrants from East Europe, including Russian Jews.
