An amusement park was one of the last images of the changing Germany that we saw in Countdown. Ever since Freak Orlando, Ottinger has been fascinated by the ambiguous, sometimes morbid aesthetics of circus and funhouse. Welcome to Prater, an amusement park in Vienna, which the director explores in the company of her regular collaborators: poet Elfriede Gerstl and the Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek each contributed with pieces of writing with reminiscences of their childhoods in Vienna. Actress Veruschka played Barbarella and there are images from films by Stroheim and Sternberg, among others.
