Rocío

Fernando Ruiz Vergara
1980 • Spain • 70’

Women and their symbolism in traditionalist ideologies lead to the cult of the Virgin, one of whose expressions is the legend of the Virgen del Rocío. The film shows the genesis of the El Rocío pilgrimage and unveils the economic, socio-political and religious reasons and interests that nurture the phenomenon. It was the first to be seized and judicially censored in Spain after the approval of the 1978 constitution and the disappearance of Franco’s mechanisms for prior film censorship. Today it is still unable to be screened in its unabridged version throughout Spain.
