Afraid of revolutionaries, a 1905 layman went into lethargic sleep and spent twenty years in a museum of the past era as a specimen of his class. Until he awakened… Ottinger’s adaptation of a grotesque short story by Odessa-born Valentin Kataev is part of the monumental project Südostpassage, but this segment has individual merit as a stand-alone piece thanks to a stylized theatrical style in the spirit of the Soviet art from the 1920s. The little-known story was only adapted for the screen once in the writer’s own country: as a comedy sketch in the TV show Humour Encyclopaedia (1968).
