Doclisboa’s education project, abcDoc, has been focusing year in, year out on developing audiences through documentary film, in an initiative that brings together pedagogy, art and citizenship. The aim is to foster an audience that is more aware, critical and attentive to the realities of the surrounding world. Cinema can be seen as a way to intervene, featuring different options of training, looking at reality through new ways of cinematic creation, from the past to the contemporary world. This year, abcDoc strengthens the programme with Doc Escolas sessions followed by debates and with the Docs 4 Kids workshops. The goal is to add to the artistic and cultural curricular and extracurricular knowledge of the students with spaces for sharing, reflecting and discussing between the school community and film directors, thus prompting interest for documentary filmmaking. Education toward film literacy is key in a society where cinematic narratives play a pivotal role as far as communication and culture go. We consider education through cinema necessary to help students interact in a critical and empathic way, not only as passive spectators, but also as engaged and thinking participants in their communities.
