Nas profundezas da Grande Depressão nos EUA, uma aliança de cineastas radicais lutou para criar um novo género de documentário social. Enfrentaram a crise criando um novo cinema da realidade, infundindo sentimentos nos factos, propaganda na arte e drama na actualidade, para documentar, divulgar e até ajudar a resolver questões importantes de tempos conturbados. Se o New Deal buscava uma outra América, o documentário fazia o mesmo. As câmaras transformadas em armas de colectivos revolucionários (Film and Photo League, Frontier Films), produções ambiciosas do Governo dos EUA e realizadores como Joris Ivens, Leo Hurwitz, Pare Lorentz, Ralph Steiner e Paul Strand atestam uma década de possibilidades e experiências tanto no cinema como na sociedade ao mesmo tempo que mostram a quantidade de desafios contemporâneos que espelham o passado.
São ao todo 58 filmes que compõem a retrospectiva O Documentário em Marcha: Conturbados anos 30 na América do New Deal, programada em colaboração com a Cinemateca Portuguesa, onde acontecerão todas as projecções.
