WEEKEND WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNGSTERS AGED 6 TO 15

The Docs 4 Kids weekend workshops seek to create an accessible, creative and playful space where children and youngsters can discover documentary cinema. More than teaching techniques, they invite participants to observe, think and express themselves through the moving image. Each workshop combines creative experimentation and thought-building among all. In this edition, the main themes are filmmaking, practical work and sound effects.

Trainers: Isabel Coelho, Marta Covita, Bazar do Vídeo
Length: 2hrs

OCT 18 (sat) / 10.00 am, Bazar do Vídeo
for youngsters aged 9 – 15

Bazar do Vídeo | Fujifilm workshop: the basics of photographic technique
Under the guidance of Paulo Petronilho, the workshop comprises a theoretical component, during which one will address photographic techniques and the characteristics of a photo camera, and a practical component, during which each participant will have a Fujifilm camera at their disposal and will be able to put into practice the knowledge acquired during the theoretical component.

OCT 18 (sat) / 3.30 pm, Casa do Comum
for youngsters aged 12 – 15

Images that speak, silences that scream
Inspired by Eva Giolo’s film Memory Is an Animal, It Barks with Many Mouths, this workshop invites young people to explore how cinema mixes sound and image to tell invisible stories. Using echoes, silences and off-screen voices, we will play with cameras and microphones to create films where sound and image follow different paths: noises that become characters and silences that say more than words.

OCT 25 (sat) / 11.00 am, Cinemateca – M. F. Ribeiro Cinema — SOLD OUT
for children aged 8 – 12

Silence, we’re recording!
It is not only fantastic or animated cinema that ‘manufactures’ sound environments. Foley artists, or sound designers, use everyday objects to create sounds that were not recorded during shooting and can be more or less realistic (a galloping horse, a flock of birds, or a beating heart). Do the sounds of a documentary always have to be realistic? With the things we have at hand, we will create sound effects for documentary cinema.

OCT 25 (sat) / 3.30 pm, Casa do Comum
for youngsters aged 11 – 15

Letters to the future (of work)
Based on excerpts from Sarah Vanagt’s film Wishful Filming, this workshop invites us to reflect on the interventions and desires of those who build cities and those who anonymously express their words, thoughts and ideas. In two research groups, we will film the course of this documentary research of hidden messages and treasures in Lisbon.

OCT 26 (sun) / 11.00 am, Palácio Galveias Library
for children aged 6 – 10

Letters to the future (of work)
In a playful and artistic way, using excerpts from Sara Vanagt’s film Wishful Filming, we will delve into historical research and imagine who the people were who worked on the construction of Palácio Galveias. Using books and conversations, we will look for clues as to what we might find inside the walls, behind the skirting boards or in the floorboards.
