WEEKEND WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNGSTERS AGED 6 TO 15
Docs 4 Kids are documentary film workshops where parents and children can experiment, play, and create together on the weekends. Cinema is explored as a space for imagination and expression, encouraging children to ask questions and come up with ideas through images. More than learning techniques, Docs 4 Kids aims to create a family film experience. This year, the main topics are culture and human relations, work practices, and photography.

OCT 17 (sat) / 10.00 am, Cinemateca – Luís de Pina Cinema
for children aged 6 – 8

The documentary gesture
After watching several short films from the Cinemateca Digital archive, we will reflect on the cinematic content of these works within the contexts in which they were made and on how these films might be interpreted today. Next, we will scout locations within the Cinemateca building and create a collective film essay about the Cinemateca itself, filming various spaces and interviewing some of the people who work there.

Depicting a friendship
Using an excerpt from Sébastien Laudenbach’s animated film Viva Carmen and observing the images, sounds and editing, we will reflect on how the director chose to depict the friendship between the film’s young characters. Next, we will write and illustrate a story about friendship in several scenes.

Bazar do Vídeo | Fujifilm workshop: the basics of photographic technique
Under the guidance of Paulo Petronilho, the workshop comprises a theoretical component, during which one will address photographic techniques and the characteristics of a photo camera, and a practical component, during which each participant will have a Fujifilm camera at their disposal and will be able to put into practice the knowledge acquired during the theoretical component.

Depicting work
Using an excerpt from Cláudia Ribeiro’s film Vent du matin, we will reflect on the director’s point of view and her approach to conveying the lived experiences of the people being filmed through camera placement, sound recording, and her choices about what to show, what to let the audience hear, and what to suggest. Next, we will discuss seasonal agricultural work in Portugal and create a work scenario, acted out and recorded by the workshop participants.

Introducing and portraying a character in a film
After watching the opening scenes of Sébastien Laudenbach’s film Viva Carmen and examining a deck of tarot cards, we will create description cards for the characters featured. Next, we will collaboratively write a scene for these characters and bring them to life in front of the camera.
