Constellation: Reframing: preservation and experimentation with archive imagery

A reflection on film archives as territories of creation and reinterpretation, bringing together practices that engage with preservation institutions and artists, and explore ways to critically reinscribe images in the contemporary world.

Catarina Alves Costa (director and researcher)

Catarina Alves Costa is a filmmaker and a visual anthropologist. She directs films since 1992, won various international prizes and published different works on documentary and ethnographic films. She is currently a Professor in Visual Culture at the Department of Anthropology, Nova University in Lisbon.

Andres Jurado

His work explores the intersections of performance, experimental and expanded cinema, propaganda, decolonization, science fiction, and archival practices, and their impact on contemporary narratives and politics. He is part of the La Vulcanizadora Laboratory.

Paula Albuquerque

(director and researcher)

Film artist and scholar presenting work at EYE Filmmuseum (2026); galleries, i.e. Zone2Source (2024); film festivals, i.e. IDFA (2024); and conferences, i.e. NECS (2025). Researcher at Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

Stefanie Baumann is a researcher at CineLab/IFILNOVA (NOVA Lisbon), where she leads the “Thinking Documentary Film” group. She has taught philosophy and aesthetics and worked with artists like Shalev-Gerz, Voignier, and Al Solh.
