Frances Hubbard Flaherty was the person who made all her husbands’ major films, from Nanook of the North to Louisiana Story, happen. Their three daughters, Barbara, Franny and Monica, as well as Robert’s brother David and others, all played crucial parts in ensuring that his films were completed. Sami van Ingen, a great-grandson of Flaherty, uses previously unseen archival material to share his own family stories. This deeply researched and emotional film, reminiscent of a 19th century family novel, opens up the historical landscape of people sidelined by history.
