From These Roots: A Review of the Harlem Renaissance

William Greaves

When the United States Information Agency wanted a news item about a major arts festival in Dakar, Senegal, Greaves was provided with minimal funding and equipment and a single cameraman. They trained their chauffeur to take sound and produced The First World Festival of Negro Arts, a poetic survey of the festival, featuring poet Langston Hughes. Produced for the United States Information Agency, Wealth of a Nation is Greaves’ personal paean to the fundamental importance of individual self-expression. From These Roots tells the story of the Harlem Renaissance in photographs.
