Hussein Darby, the last projectionist at Cinema Jenin in Palestine, sees a golden opportunity when a German NGO arrives to restore the theatre. Eager to prove his skills and reclaim his job, he travels across the West Bank and even attempts to cross into Israel to revive the 50-year-old projector. But as the international initiative grows, Hussein becomes a small cog in the machine. The film is both a multifaceted examination of development aid in Palestine, laying bare the colonial residues embedded in a politics of ‘charity for peace’, and a tribute to a vanishing cinema culture.
