In Wuppertal, two dancers learn Pina Bausch’s Orpheus and Eurydice under the direction of Dominique Mercy, who created the role of Orpheus in 1975. Between rehearsals and work with the corps de ballet, the transmission is refined, patiently reconstructing this landmark Tanztheater work up to its premiere. Revived after nearly thirty years, the work marked the emergence of Bausch’s singular choreographic style. Filming the rehearsals where it was created expresses the director’s attachment to the ballet, its performers and a choreographer who left her mark on the history of dance.
