In the late 1980s, a team of Ukrainian filmmakers undertook several film expeditions to remote areas of Siberia. Their forgotten film reels, produced by Kyivnaukfilm, the Ukrainian studio specialising in popular science cinema and animation, were rediscovered in Kyiv in 2023, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This is the starting point for a film essay that questions Russian imperialism, environmental destruction and the ongoing oppression of indigenous peoples in Russia’s colonies.
