Basel Adra, Palestinian director of No Other Land, winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, at Doclisboa 2026

Palestinian filmmaker, journalist and lawyer Basel Adra, co-director of No Other Land, winner of the 2025 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, will attend the 24th edition of Doclisboa. On 24 October at 5pm, at Culturgest’s Fórum Debates, Adra will take part in a conversation about the value and place of the images in a film that has travelled around the world. This event is supported by Associação José Afonso.

Born in Masafer Yatta, in the West Bank, Basel Adra documented the forced displacement of his community and the destruction of their homes between 2019 and 2023. This footage and his unlikely friendship with Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham gave rise to No Other Land (2024), directed by Adra, Abraham, Hamdan Ballal and Rachel Szor.

Premiering at the Berlinale, where it received the Documentary Award and the Panorama Audience Award, No Other Land went on to reach audiences around the world and, in 2025, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. At Doclisboa, the film provides the starting point for a conversation with Basel Adra about the value of images as testimony and memory.

The conversation will be led by Stefanie Baumann, co-director of Doc’s Kingdom and a researcher at IFILNOVA/NOVA FCSH.

Throughout its 24th edition, Doclisboa presents an extensive programme of conversations and encounters( see here) bringing filmmakers, artists, thinkers and audiences together and extending the questions raised by the films beyond the screening room.

Doclisboa takes place from 15 to 25 October at Culturgest, Cinema São Jorge, Cinemateca Portuguesa, Cinema Ideal and the Gulbenkian Modern Art Centre. All information is available at doclisboa.org.

In October, the whole world fits in Lisbon.
