Doclisboa stands in solidarity and advocates the immediate release of South Korean filmmaker Jung Yoon-suk, who has been detained since January 19th of this year while trying to document the riots and protests in Seoul following the enforcement of martial law in South Korea.
Jung Yoon-suk is known for documenting social movements and historical events in his country over the last two decades, always with a critical gaze. Yoon-suk was at Doclisboa in 2017 with Bamseom Pirates Seoul Inferno, a feature film about two young Korean musicians who challenge the system and the authorities through their unwavering passion for music.
We join the International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk in calling on the international film community and the wider public to show support against this wrongful persecution, without the right to a full trial and appeal.
To quote Jung Yoon-suk, “In a democratic society, artists serve as watchdogs of history (…) For an artist, expression is not just a matter of freedom; it is a matter of human rights, guaranteeing our dignity and our rights as human beings.”
You can find ways to support and more information on the International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk website.
