As part of the retrospective dedicated to Lino Brocka, a seminal figure in Filipino cinema, presented by Doclisboa in partnership with the Cinemateca Portuguesa, the CAM—Gulbenkian Center for Modern Art—will host, on October 17 at 6:00 p.m., Lino Brocka – National Anarchist, an audiovisual performance featuring Khavn De La Cruz.
Built from remnants of Brocka’s film archive, the performance blends cinema, archival material, and political memory in a screening accompanied by live piano improvisation by Khavn De La Cruz, curator of the retrospective and one of the central figures of contemporary Philippine independent cinema. The performance brings together two generations of Filipino cinema, revisiting Brocka’s cinematic and political legacy through De La Cruz’s perspective and music.
This event offers an opportunity to discover the work and ideas of Lino Brocka, a filmmaker who directed more than 60 films over the course of just over two decades. During the years of Ferdinand Marcos’s dictatorship in the Philippines, he was a central figure in the cultural resistance and an active defender of freedom of expression, using cinema as a tool for social critique and civic engagement.
Khavn De La Cruz is a leading figure in the Philippine No Wave movement. A Filipino filmmaker, writer, musician, and artist, he has directed more than 300 films since 1994, which have been screened at institutions such as MoMA, the Tate Modern, the Guggenheim, and the Museo Reina Sofía. He served as director of the MOV International Film, Music, and Literature Festival and has also worked as a programmer, curator, and jury member at international festivals. He is also the author of several books of poetry and fiction.
