Distribution and production, challenges that begin at home: strategic notes to promote non fiction films

Portuguese producer Renata Sancho (Cedro Plátano) and Argentinian distributor María Vera (Kino Rebelde), who lives in Portugal, discuss the practice and hurdles of promoting non-fiction films in the present context. This dialogue aims at shedding light on local challenges and international perspectives in a daunting context. How to plan strategies, on which support to count, the first steps to take and how to avoid sinking in the distribution sea.

María Vera

Kino Rebelde (Argentina, Portugal)

Festival distributor and sales agent. Founder of Kino Rebelde, a company focused on festival strategy and creative distribution of documentaries, and experimental and hybrid narratives. Has been supporting emerging and established filmmakers since 2017. The films in her catalogue have been selected and awarded in festivals such as Berlinale, Locarno, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Visions du Réel, New York, Jeonju, Viennale, Sarajevo and Doclisboa, among others.

Renata Sancho

Cedro Plátano (Portugal)

Director and producer who lives and works in Lisbon. Has a degree in communication sciences—film and television—from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Nova University of Lisbon. Taught editing at ESAD – College of Art and Design in 2010. Also works as editor and script supervisor, having participated in several feature, documentary and short films. In charge of the production and distribution company Cedro Plátano since 2013.
