Tapiola

Markku Lehmuskallio

The events of this film are not bound by time; they were, they are, and they will always be. This is the story of a hunter who brings an offering to the Goddess of his ancestors—the Feathered Bird. Lehmuskallio considered Tapiola to be among his best works and about man’s attitude towards nature both before and after the Industrial Revolution. A film poem that combines fiction, Beethoven’s Die Himmel rühmen des Ewigen Ehre, verses from the Kalevala and images of nature. Pertti Kalinainen, a protagonist of Korpinpolska (1980), plays a man who is the only living creature who knows his days are numbered.
