Nedarma Matka

Anastasia Lapsui, Markku Lehmuskallio

The directors assembled the outtakes from almost 18 years of their filming in the Northern Siberian tundra into a visual odyssey across the Nenets cosmology. As Kathleen Osgoode explains, in the Nenets language, ‘Nedarma’ signifies the migratory herding patterns that have been the Nenets way of life since they first arrived at the Yamal Peninsula. Vincent Malausa, in Cahiers du Cinéma, called the film “a masterpiece in which the form reaches an unprecedented splendour”. “This film has a special meaning for me. Here I present my own view of the Nenets religion and life after death” (Lapsui).
