Round table: Alternative paths to distribute independent non-fiction cinema

Experts in programming and distribution debate ways of defining audiences, exploring alternative circuits and guaranteeing the longevity of a film outside of traditional models, highlighting the importance of independent distribution as a tool of resistance in the contemporary Ibero-American audiovisual panorama.

Speakers

Carlos Gutiérrez

Co-founding executive director of Cinema Tropical, the leading promoter of Latin American cinema in the USA. Has curated at institutions like MoMA, Film at Lincoln Center, Guggenheim, BAM Film, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Anthology Film Archives, and the Flaherty Seminar. Serves on Film Forum’s board, is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and has juried at several international film festivals.

Mercedes Moncada

Documentary filmmaker focusing on creation, teaching and public cultural policies. Was the subject of retrospectives at the Spanish Cultural Centre (2012), Ourense Film Festival (2017) and Atlantic Film Festival (2006). Her films have been screened in cinematheques and numerous festivals around the world, being awarded several times. Has been a jury member at various festivals and competitions. Vice-president of the Spanish Documentary Film Association.

Rodrigo Díaz

Rodrigo Díaz (they/them) is a Chilean producer and distributor based in Lisbon, with a Film and TV degree from the University of Chile. Rodrigo has produced notable short films including Austral Fever (Venice Biennale 2019) and The Melting Creatures (Cannes Critics’ Week 2022). As a distributor, they have managed award-winning shorts such as AliEN0089 (Sundance winner 2023) and the Oscar-qualified The Cascade (2024).

Brais Romero

Producer and distributor (Ferrol, 1990). Recently created La Machina, a distributor that seeks to enhance cinema made with heart and guts. Produced the documentaries Te separas mucho and Fomos ficando sós. Coordinated the School of Cinematography and Audiovisual of the Community of Madrid’s La Distribuidora for over two years. Doctor in communication and contemporary information with a thesis on the relation between film and the Galician language.
