Round table: Digital Restoration and Preservation of Black Cinema - “One Is Few, Two Would Fill” by Odilon Lopes

The conversation will focus on the impact of restoration on the valuation of key works of Brazilian cinema, and on the relevance of archives to memory and cultural identity, highlighting how technology contributes to the preservation and revaluation of black narratives. This round table will be followed by the screening of the film Um é Pouco, Dois é Bom, by Odilon Lopez.

Lincoln Péricles

Documentary filmmaker who was born and lives in one of the largest slums in Brazil, Capão Redondo, in the outskirts of São Paulo. Makes films in his territory and places of great importance to his people. His work has been highlighted by Cahiers du Cinéma, describing it as “A cinema far removed from the imagery linked to the Brazilian favelas, which invents its own form”. Has made over 15 short films and is working on his first feature-length documentary.

Tiago Baptista

Director of the conservation centre and archive of Cinemateca Portuguesa-Museu do Cinema.

Vanessa Lopez

Journalist, and since 2007 a public servant at the Legislative Assembly of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil. Co-organiser of the compendium A Ditadura de Segurança Nacional no Rio Grande do Sul 1964 – 1985: História e Memória, published by the Legislative Assembly and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Daughter of Odilon Lopez, seeks to preserve and promote her father’s work with her brother, Juliano Lopez.

Film historian, critic and programmer. Co-founder of the INDETERMINAÇÕES platform. Editor-in-chief of câmarescura magazine. Has worked as a programmer at the Belo Horizonte International Short Film Festival and the Recife International Film Festival. Took part in the RAW/Arché residency in 2023 with the project Uma Super-8 em Mãos Negras: O Filme Doméstico de Odilon Lopez.
