Round table: Exiles and colonialism: re-appropriating home archives as a mirror of democracy

This panel discusses the films Exile Diaries and Overseas and the way in which they mirror the experiences of displacement and the implications for identity and history, as well as their impact on the democratic understanding of cultural and political narratives. This session is followed by a screening of short films curated by Josetxo Cerdán.

In partnership with ICAA – Spain’s Film and Audiovisual Arts Institute.

The session will be held in English, with no translation. Free admittance. Tickets must be collected on that day at the venue.

Speakers

Daniel Ribas

Film researcher, curator and writer. Professor at the School of Arts, Catholic University of Portugal, where he coordinates the master in cinema and heads the Research Center for Science and Technology of the Arts (CITAR). Has curated several film programmes, particularly for Porto/Post/Doc, of whose artistic direction he was a member (2016-2018). Currently curates for Curtas Vila do Conde and Batalha Centro de Cinema.

Isabel Rojas

Cultural manager, film programmer and exhibitor. Artistic director of Seminario El Público del Futuro FICUNAM, and founder of Oaxaca Cine Móvil. Berlinale Talent alumni, Flaherty Film Seminar curatorial fellow and programmer. Jury, tutor and collaborator of festivals, organisations and film schools, such as the IMCINE, FICUNAM, Morelia International Film Festival, Ambulante, Fragmentos de lo Real (Bolivia), Proimagenes Colombia, Cine Cauce España.

Joana Ascensão

Has been a programmer at Cinemateca Portuguesa-Museu do Cinema since 2009, responsible for designing theme programmes and author retrospectives. Studied photography at Ar.Co and has a degree and a master’s degree in communication sciences from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Nova University of Lisbon. Directed the film Pintura Habitada, which won the award for Best Portuguese Feature-Length Documentary at the Doclisboa Festival 2006.

Josetxo Cerdán

Professor at the University Carlos III (Madrid). Also taught at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (2003-2008) and at the University Rovira i Virgili (2008-2015). Has been director of the Navarra International Documentary Film Festival and Filmoteca Española, and has developed programmes for several national and international institutions like the Locarno International Film Festival.
