Round table: Programming and curating: perspectives on non-fiction film

This round table examines the dynamics involved in programming and curating independent non-fiction film. We will focus on the approaches taken to select and screen independent films, and on how such practices affect the visibility and distribution of those works. This event is financed by national funds through FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology in the scope of the UIDB/0622/2020 and UIDP/0622/2020 projects.

Presented by Doclisboa, Seminário el Público del Futuro and the Catholic University of Portugal through CITAR (Research Centre in Science and Technology of the Arts) and the School of Arts.

The session will be held in English, with no translation. Free admittance.

Isabel Rojas

Cultural manager, film programmer and exhibitor. Artistic director of Seminario El Público del Futuro FICUNAM, and founder of Oaxaca Cine Móvil. Berlinale Talent alumni, Flaherty Film Seminar curatorial fellow and programmer. Jury, tutor and collaborator of festivals, organisations and film schools, such as the IMCINE, FICUNAM, Morelia International Film Festival, Ambulante, Fragmentos de lo Real (Bolivia), Proimagenes Colombia, Cine Cauce España.

Jean-Pierre Rehm

A graduate of the Normal Superior School of Paris, taught film and art history at French art schools and worked with the Ministry of Culture. Former director of FIDMarseille (2001-2022), has contributed to publications like Cahiers du Cinéma. Has written on artists and filmmakers, including Roee Rosen and Mark Lewis, and curated exhibitions in France and abroad, including the Cairo Museum of Modern Art and Yokohama Art Center.

Rada Šešić

Festival programmer, lecturer, critic and director. Collaborated with the Amsterdam and Rotterdam film festivals for 20 years. Head of the documentary competition at Sarajevo Film Festival and co-head of Docu Rough Cut Boutique. Teaches at the master in film in Amsterdam and is artistic director of the Eastern Neighbours Film Festival in The Hague. Mentor in many workshops in Europe and Asia. Her films have been shown in over 60 festivals.

Richard Peña

Emeritus professor of film and media studies at Columbia University, specialised in film theory and international cinema. Was the programme director of the Film at Lincoln Center, and the director of the New York FF. Organised retrospectives and film series devoted to the world’s cinema. Visiting professor at Princeton, Harvard and La Sorbonne. Also taught at the universities of Beijing, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and at the Gedai Art Institute (Tokyo).

Daniel Ribas

Film researcher, curator and writer. Professor at the School of Arts, Catholic University of Portugal, where he coordinates the master in cinema and heads the Research Center for Science and Technology of the Arts (CITAR). Has curated several film programmes, particularly for Porto/Post/Doc, of whose artistic direction he was a member (2016-2018). Currently curates for Curtas Vila do Conde and Batalha Centro de Cinema.
