What if Putin’s Russia in 2022 had never happened? Such is the hypothesis of this historical/hysterical dystopia, driven by our political unconscious. After laying out a delirious Utopia, all that’s left are homogenised societies, here shown in Germany, Russia and China. Cristian von Borries uses AI and generative technologies to create a post-dramatic film, a “dialectics without passion” (Heiner Müller). The filmmaker’s most personal work reflects the twisted history of Germany, not to mention Wagner—the Russian mercenaries and the German composer.
