Two Refusals (Would We Recognize Ourselves Unbroken?)

Suneil Sanzgiri

A woman’s dreams become haunted by the Adamastor—a titan from Portuguese mythology who sought to destroy Vasco de Gama’s ship and prevent him from ever reaching India. Interviews and fictional narratives, CGI animation, super 16mm, hand-processed and destroyed archival film, uncover the material and immaterial network of relations that developed between India and Africa in their struggle against Portuguese colonialism. Repurposed from Portugal’s oldest epic poem, the Adamastor becomes a figure of refusal, and failure, to ultimately pose the question: “What could have been?”
