In June 1979, hundreds of exiles and amnesty activists in Brazil arrived in Rome from various countries. Effective intervention in the process of political liberalisation was needed, as the military dictatorship refused to release political prisoners and was secretly plotting to extend amnesty to torturers. A young exile filmed the event and kept the negatives in a basement in Paris for nearly 50 years. Anita Leandro meets some of the participants and confronts them with these images, reigniting the debate over the continuity of the dictatorship’s repressive apparatus and the impunity of those responsible for the repression.
