Atlas of Disappearance follows three relatives of the disappeared as they search for the remains of their loved ones, confronting bureaucratic, legal and social obstacles that persist decades after the Spanish Civil War. Between 1959 and 1981, the Franco regime transferred more than 33,000 bodies from over 500 mass graves across Spain to El Valle de los Caídos. Drawing on the director’s research with Forensic Architecture, the film uses digital maps, citizen archives and forensic technology to reconstruct what repression sought to erase and trace fragile evidence preserved by families.
