Brocka’s debut, adapted from a Mars Ravelo graphic novel, is the story of a widowed father, four children, and a governess who might become their new mother. In the three women—the sacrificial wife, the nurturing governess, the working-class yaya who polices ‘legitimate’ motherhood while being permanently excluded from it—you can see Brocka building the foundation for later, darker films. The film says nothing about class but is entirely about it.
