Pavements

How best to commemorate the career of Pavement, one of the defining indie rock bands of the 1990s? A museum exhibition? How about a jukebox Broadway musical? Or perhaps a prestige movie biopic? Alex Ross Perry gives us all of the above and more in his multifaceted meta-movie. Fuelled by a sardonic, tricky sense of humour reminiscent of Pavement’s caustic, idiosyncratic music, Perry shows little patience for hagiography—or any other orthodoxy. Pavements integrates archival footage, newly shot material from their 2022 comeback tour, and semi-scripted scenes about shooting a movie within the movie.
