Letters to My Dead Parents

Cartas a mis padres muertos

Ignacio Agüero

The filmmaker finds a way to update his dead parents on what has happened in his family and country over the past 50 years. His father died just before the military coup led by Pinochet, without seeing how the worst of humanity was installed in power. Raúl Ruiz appears in his dreams, sparking a conversation about surrealism and political cinema. Death renders us all confabulations, works of fiction, so that we can carry on living, and for Agüero there are no ghosts, only the entire universe around us—cats, plants, sunlight, shadows, and the clouds, which could play the roles of those who have left us.
