Sarah and Laurent are high mountain guides scrabbling around the moraines of the Mer de Glace [Sea of Ice], with no clear objective. Named by a British explorer in the late 19th century for its similarity to “a lake shaken by a strong breeze and suddenly frozen”, it is now a gaping hollow, bearing the imprint of its vanished ice mass and giving way to a moraine amphitheatre. Moraines are the rocky debris dragged along by the movement of a glacier. While an inexperienced walker struggles to find his way without falling , Sarah and Laurent dance with the void, and the verticality and instability of the terrain.
