Beatriz Santiago Muñoz

In New Materials, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz shows Elizam Escobar, an artist and poet who spent decades in prison for his political activism. Laurel sabino and jaguilla are the names of two magnolias endemic to Puerto Rico. For Muñoz, if magnolias have a language, it should be something like avant-garde poetry. In the streets of Algiers, jacaranda trees bloom like shards of memory. In Alea Jacarandas, filmmaker Hassen Ferhani embarks on an intimate journey in which his father’s stories sketch a loving dictionary of the city. Writing, filming and choosing beauty become acts of resistance.
