Noli me tangere

Ghassan Salhab

If the sun drowns in a sea of mist / And a wave of darkness covers the world / And sight vanishes from every eye and gaze / And the path is lost among lines and circles / You who wander, who searches, and who understand / Have no guide but the eyes of words. The Egyptian poet Ahmed Fouad Negm wrote these lines in the early 1970s. Today, they are sung by a woman who stands with her back to the horizon. Noli me tangere is a journey in which personal history is inevitably disrupted by the course of history in Lebanon. It begins at the moment when the very idea of tomorrow suddenly loses all meaning.
