Apparition

Ismaïl Bahri

Two hands hold a photograph in front of the lens. It is so violently lit from both sides that it is impossible to distinguish any image. Only the shadows cast by the moving hands reveal what is hidden by the light. Little by little a gathered crowd on their back appears. It is March 20, 1956, Tunisia’s independence day. Not seeing, touching, finding out, fragment, entirety, autobiography, history, individual, crowd, light, shadow, fixed image, moving image, as one will understand, it is about interlacing this heterogenous sequence without pretending to put an end to it.
