Sunless Haven

George Clark

Sunless Haven animates dispersed fragments of historical documents and architectural remnants, looking at London’s river Thames as a resonant chamber connecting disparate worlds. It attempts to understand the docklands as a meeting place between different ecologies, enclosures and epochs; a point where the city and the world become entangled. It moves from the legacy of the police persecution of seamen to the experiences of London as recounted by Ayahs and Amahs—South Asian nannies who were abandoned in the city—and to Lao She’s pioneering novel, Mr Ma and Son, first published in 1929.
