From the luminous shots and camera movements of Gabriel Veyre, cinematographer of the Lumière brothers, to the sensual and joyous depiction of Javier Rebollo’s visit to the Sultan of the Land of Nour (Close to the Sultan), this year’s New Visions programme continues to place the contemporary nature of cinema at the centre of its enigma.
New Visions
Shot between 1896 and 2025, the films presented here emerged from multiple practices and intuitions of the world, from a deep desire for connection. This is evident in the work of Hala Elkoussy, one of the invited filmmakers, whose political and poetic imagery is both resourceful and cutting.
As a second invited filmmaker, we present the films of Trương Minh Quý, including his collaborations with Nicolas Graux. His cinema incorporates multiple traditions from fiction, non-fiction and science fiction. It is a cinema of attention and detail, where care is not just a slogan, but a worldview.
This year’s New Visions sees the return of Shadowboxing, which comprises three programmes designed in a dialogue with Jean-Pierre Rehm. It features Palestine as a question, a horizon, and a spiritual and moral presence that provides a measure, a skin, with which to reconsider how to conjugate images in the face of horror.

INVITED DIRECTORS TRƯƠNG MINH QUÝ, NICOLAS GRAUX
Trương Minh Quý has developed a multifaceted body of work stemming from his deep bond to Vietnam and its people. By combining various film traditions, ranging from ethnography to science fiction and self-fiction, his films open a space to reflect on history and memory through the materiality of present times. Characters appear with the vibrancy of innocence, hope and testimony. Quý has collaborated with Nicolas Graux since Nhím. The two have also co-directed Tóc, Giấy và Nước….

INVITED DIRECTOR HALA ELKOUSSY
A visual artist before becoming a filmmaker, Elkoussy brings extraordinary inventiveness and freedom to her films. Her touching and amusing characters find ways to resist the challenges they face, while proposing dreamed worlds that we are invited to share. Fable-like, explosive and joyful, Elkoussy’s cinema brings a rich formal world to a sophisticated, deeply lucid, poetic and political grounding, where Egypt is both the source of inspiration and the haunting air that one breathes.

SHADOWBOXING
Shadow boxing, invented by George Dixon (1870-1908) and described in his 1893 pamphlet A lesson in boxing, is a training technique where the athlete fights an imaginary opponent. It is a fight without the counterpart, a movement with no return. This second instalment has Palestine as its horizon and raison d’être under the sign of Mahmoud Darwich: “Two metres of this earth will be enough for now / a meter and 75 centimetres for me / and the rest for flowers in a riot of colour” (Mural, 1999).

DARK STAR
A dark star is a theoretical alternative to a black hole, formed when a star collapses. The intriguing and uncompromising films of Jacques Meilleurat make the most of narrative and form. We present two that speak to each other through a radical use of the filmmaker’s face, body and voice, in a dark and haunting, yet fragile and intimate, exploration of human contradictions, misery and pain. Stan Brakhage’s Anticipation of the Night is a fitting counterpart.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER’S CLAIRVOYANCE – FROM 1896 TO 2025
The invention of cinema is a matter of fascination, collective projection and aesthetic dispute. The complexities surrounding the intersection of technology, gaze, power and the creation of collective fantasies are still up for debate, perhaps more than ever. This programme links two contemporary films to one of the inventors of cinema, Gabriel Veyre, and a series of rarely seen films shot around the world. Such images are as vibrant and contemporary to us as any other image of our time.
